Understanding Car Insurance

People buy car insurance because they know that owning and operating a car is expensive. When accidents occur, the costs of repairs, medical bills and lawsuits could prove astronomical. The correct auto insurance will help you afford the costs of these accidents without having to dig into your own pockets. You’ll have a stable, secure way to manage your recovery from these often-devastating events.

But the thing is that all policies are unique, just like all drivers. Therefore, you need to work with an agent who knows what to do to help you put together the appropriate policy. That's our specialty, and we’ll combine all our expertise to help you design a policy to fit both your coverage and cost needs.

Does Florida require auto insurance?

Like most states, Florida requires drivers to carry auto insurance. All drivers must have a minimum of:

  • $10,000 personal injury protection (PIP coverage)
  • $10,000 property damage liability coverage

Because Florida is a no-fault bodily injury state, drivers must file first against their PIP coverage for costs like medical bills, lost income or other expenses related to accident injuries. Regardless of whose fault the accident was, your PIP coverage pays first. Only afterwards might you be able to file against the at-fault driver’s bodily injury liability insurance.

Property damage liability insurance will pay for third-party property damage if the accident was your fault. Florida’s no-fault auto insurance laws do not apply to property damage.

Should I buy other coverage for my vehicle?

The $10,000 PIP & PDL limits required by Florida law are very low compared to the full protection that your auto policy might be able to offer. Therefore, it’s always recommended that you increase your minimum PIP & PDL limits to offer yourself additional protection.

Additionally, you should consider adding other benefits to your policy, including:

  • Bodily Injury Liability Insurance: This coverage can pay for third-party bodily injuries when an accident is your fault, after those parties exceed the limits of their own PIP coverage.
  • Collision Insurance: Coverage pays for your own vehicle damage following a wreck.
  • Comprehensive Insurance: If a hazard that is not related to a wreck damages your car, then this coverage can pay for repairs. It might pay following fires, weather, theft or vandalism damage.
  • Uninsured Motorist Coverage: If an accident is someone else’s fault, but they lack liability insurance to cover you, then this coverage can pay.

What does car insurance cost in Florida?

All auto insurance policies will vary in price, not only from policy to policy, but also from driver to driver. The reason is because all drivers present different levels of risk to insurers.

Your risk is your likelihood of filing a claim on your policy and causing your insurer to pay on your behalf. The higher your risk, the more you are likely to pay for coverage. Some of the risk factors that might impact your rates are:

  • Your vehicle valueThe policy limits and deductibles you include on your policy
  • Your driving record and history of accidents
  • Your history of insurance claims
  • Where you live
  • The number of drivers who use your vehicle

Plus, different companies will offer different rates to various clients. They will also offer various discounts and other perks to help you optimize your savings capabilities. Our agents are happy to work with you to compare different policy options to find the one that offers you the best choice of coverage.
